Eighth Annual Nursing Research Conference Concludes Nurses’ Week Celebration

The 2017 UM Shore Regional Health Nursing Conference, held May 12 at Chesapeake College’s Cadby Theatre, was a great success, attracting 54 nurses to the day-long event
“Our goal was to have a variety of presentations from Nursing and Patient Care Services that would cover topics ranging from research studies to methods to increase employee engagement and ideas to improve the patient experience, ” says Kathy Elliott, director, Professional Nursing Practice and Magnet Program. “Several of the participants were first-time speakers and they did a fantastic job. ”
The keynote speaker for the conference was Brooke Billingsley, CEO of Perception Strategies, a national healthcare perception research company, and Task To Touch e-Learning, an online training program that allows employees to see what the patient sees in order to develop the emotional intelligence, communication, and acuity skills necessary to understand and alter patient perception.

Idea: Do discharge phone calls 1-3 days after discharge and follow- up appointments 7-10 days after discharge reduce the rates of readmissions in HF patients?
Quality Improvement
Winner: Michele Williams, UM Shore Regional Cancer Program
Idea: Implementing a new lung cancer screening program for a five-county (Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne, Talbot), three-hospital (Easton, Dorchester, Chestertown) system
Karen Spies Award: Hope Honigsberg, Orthopedic Nurse Navigator, UM SMC at Easton, was announced as this year’s winner of the Karen Spies Award for her research study, Evaluation of Health Care Workers’ Use and Cleaning of X-Ray Aprons and Thyroid Shields. The Karen Spies Award was established in 2009 by Karin Brown in recognition of the professional service and caring demeanor shown to her parents by Karen Spies, RN. Criteria for selection to receive the award are:
- Relevance of study to provision of care
- Benefit to education/research and principles of nursing practice
- Willingness to promote research to the larger community
- Use of the scientific method
- Potential benefits to UM SRH
- Alignment with the nursing mission: to excel in quality care and patient satisfaction
