UM SRH Team Members to be Honored at 9th Annual Colors of Cancer Gala
The 9th annual Colors of Cancer honoring “hometown heroes” in our community who are active in the fight against cancer will be held on Saturday, April 27, beginning at 6 p.m at the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford, Maryland.
UM Shore Regional Health honorees this year are:
2019 Colors of Cancer Medical Professional Honoree: Margot Spies, oncology nurse navigator in the Cancer Center at Shore Regional Health. Spies navigates cancer patients through the process of accepting their diagnoses and finding the help they need throughout the treatment process and into survivorship. She is active in the fight against cancer, as she has been involved with the American Cancer Society Talbot Relay for Life Team, the Memorial David Whitby Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit prostate cancer, and is a founding member of the upper Eastern Shore Oncology Nursing Society. Spies also volunteers as an oncology nurse each year for Cancer Center’s skin cancer and prostate cancer screening programs.
2019 Community Partnership Honorees: Oncology nurses at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton. The oncology nurses not only provide exceptional care to the patients they treat, but they also spend their own personal time fundraising for the oncology patients in our community. The oncology nurses on 2 East raised money that funded the creation of 115 “Chemo Caddies” (colorful fabric tote boxes containing care supplies that ease cancer patient’s discomfort during or after chemotherapy) and presented them to the Cancer Center for distribution to oncology patients. They also raised $1,760 for the cost of quilting supplies for the Bay Side Quilters of the Eastern Shore, a quilting club that donates handmade lap quilts to the Cancer Center, Talbot Hospice and 2 East oncology unit at the hospital. They also raised $1, 300 to benefit the Ruth Ann Jones Endowment Scholarship Fund at Chesapeake College.
